These moments intrigue, as modernity has alienated us from the immediacy of life. Perceptions of time become mercurial and subjective depending on perspective. Parallax Scroll will take the audience on a revisit through the emergence of life. A trip that re-exams light, language, and the development of society, ending in a space unresolved and recycled. All points can viewed when wading on a Parallax Beach. PARALLAX BEACH's "Parallax Scroll" is a multi-media performance piece that bridges the abstract landscapes of sound, light, time, and movement. A collective of artists, each utilizing different mediums, come together to make this unique work. Wes Johansen creates a visual representation of abstract thought through digital video projection, edited live and synchronized to synthesizers. Mike Meanstreetz uses avant-garde percussion and composition techniques tangling the participants of this ritualistic performance in a web of synesthesia . These elements are accentuated as josie j conveys transformation to witnesses through ritualism/ meditative movement, influenced partly by Butoh training and a background in performance art. But I do feel I need a time to explicitly remember the dead and face death as a mortal that I am. On this day I was lucky to be part of Highways Performance Space Dia de los Muertos Celebration. It was a performance that stemmed from a workshop conducted by La Pocha Noestra at Highways. The Performance itself was a variety of talented performers showcasing a variety of styles. Ranging from dance, singing, to performance, some including all three. Sneak peek pictures coming soon. After the show I was honored enough to be invited by Mike Meanstreetz to be part of a jam performance at a house in Echo Park. It was a Zombie Day of the Dead Party. I was happy enough to freak out some more and channel some ancestral wisdom to freak out the locals. Didn't quite get enough at Highways I guess. In the end it was a wonderful piece. In this process the aim is to up heave and reprocess our history, to start anew with wiser ways even if it is only limited to the artist experiencing this meditation. This meditative play resonates with a history echoing far beyond the constrained location of San Pedro. "Hull" explores these conflicting themes and histories as they cascade down its epicenter and out into its surroundings. Perch high above the shoreline Hull presents itself to this beautiful landscape. Violinist Zachary Paul (https://www.thezacharypaul.com) opens the door and sets this four-hour durational piece in motion. Notes trickle in like morning dew, every two minutes to build micro-tonal resonances. Every twenty minutes, they begin this process again with a new note, building up to a lush twelve note chordal drone by the end of the piece. A hull of a wooden vessel, echoing oil rigs, fishing boats, military bases shipping containers will be at the physical center of this work. Like dirty laundry on a washboard, fish dancing on a wooden deck, materials transported, bodies will rise and descend from this structure. This circular action will expand every twenty minutes eventually expanding into the landscape (outdoor). What will be presented is a representation of the collective memory of a space, its dark vortexes to it lighter moments of joy. The two wooden forms in the foreground were feed backing resonators/ drums which contained a microphone and a speaker each. They are hybrid bazooka speakers much like ones used in autos. The third form, the tower, in the back contained an amp and speakers. The microphone ran from one "drum" through pedal effects to the amp then to the opposite speaker in the other "drum". Two performers where stationed outside the gallery each with one "drum" 100 yards apart. What one played on one "drum" was heard on the opposite drum heard by the other performer. The table was not a table in traditional sense but more of an organ or instrument of sorts. It worked as a resonator. The top barrel shaped form was made of ceramic. The green stain on the bottom is moss. Inside the vessel was a sub speaker and a microphone. The microphone ran through an electronic effects device, to an alpine car amp then to the sub-woofer speaker in the form. The actual table was made of lumber from the urban forest of long beach (Ficus). This piece was controlled by one performer through nobs on the top of the table. The head piece was made of reclaimed lumber from an old Baptist church/ Pentecostal church. The headpiece also had a microphone located in the conal shaped form and a analog synth embedded in the body which also had nobs and circuit bending switches. This raised bed is part of the Transitional Cultures Series. This series examines thoughts and memories spanning 2012-2020. This piece came up organically since I have been meaning to build more raised beds and draw more. As I was constructing the bed I got the urge to draw on it. Not surprisingly I guess since I have been working on framing a lot of my drawings. The frame just so happened to be made first in this piece. Due to the Covid-19 situation this build had a different energy to it. I have had to be more resourceful due to lack of accessibility. The material for the raised bed came from a piece I used in a performance a few years back. I was happy to make a work from this material. It will not just lay in the archives collecting dust but will provide a positive in the space it holds. Like many I have had a lot on my mind concerning our health, our response and our lasting memory due to Covid-19. I do see this situation we are in as a continuation of a course we charted a while ago. I feel like this is a crucial time to act and decide how we wish to continue this new space we have built. Just as we are told to sit tight and wait, there are many things changing quickly and long lasting. Somehow we must find a way to continue our dialog and our activism. Mónica Moreno is a Los Angeles–based interdisciplinary artist, performer, choreographer, and teaching artist whose practice spans sound, sculpture, jewelry, installation, performance, and poetry. Trained in ballet, tap, jazz, modern, and lyrical dance, she also draws from theatre, Aztec, and her most recent training in Butoh traditions. Mónica has performed with the Los Angeles Rock Opera and appeared as a solo improvisational contemporary dancer in the Hip Hop musical Silhouettes of Scarlet. Crystal Sasaki is a Butoh dancer and multidisciplinary artist. She creates improvisational scores to enliven hyper-mediated reality. Her works combine movement, language, and audiovisual recording in an ongoing investigation of healing, dream states, and animism. This is meant to be watched as a video portrait...no time shall exist all is everywhere.... ———————————————- During the lockdown I challenged myself to listen to the Caretaker's, "Everywhere at the End of Time". Many have said to not listen to this 6hr work (that chronicles a person's mind as they lose it due to dementia) while in the grips of any challenging time. As many during the lockdown I had trouble with the isolation and the feeling that I was losing something...was it time, was it friends, were they elders, was it just the extension of the darkness that is always in me?...I think I was lucky that in spite of all the darkness in me and surrounding us, I had my family and one beautiful soul to occupy my thoughts away from my own Self...for at least some of the time. I found the Caretaker's work quite familiar somehow. I loved moving to it. I streamed an hour of the listening session, at the time. Even now when I see this recording which will premiere on July 30th, 7pm it brings this melancholy in which I still do not understand. It feels like a childhood memory in which I do not wish to remember, but fills me with the tenderness of my youth. It reminds me of hurtful times, of lovers lost, of being at the grips of my own self...It also reminds me of the bittersweet feeling of being forced to be contained alone and with another person. A time where all there was, was outside and eating something with someone special. It hurts to want to return to a time that hurt so much. A simpler moment. It is strange what we crave at times. Maybe because life is not black and white. It is said that to arrive at the place no body knows, an animal must begin by forgetting itself. To all those that arrive, the place no body knows is twilight that shimmers with the sound of countless tiny silver bells. The roots of the world tree create a deep deep cavern. There is a djinn who resides within. This djinn is the breath of the eldest mother. It is said that if true friends wholeheartedly breathe together, they have the potential to touch this djinn. This is another path to the place no body knows. It is also said that if this djinn becomes aware of animal presences, there is a chance that the ego, the mind, the blood, the heart, and the flesh may dissolve and dissipate. A lifetime of re-configuring views, beliefs, self-structure and modeling a research-oriented existence that explores belief and where it stems from, this is where it has lead. Bass pushing air, creaking, cracking a wooden device called the Basso, to set the bio and molecular rhythm of the space. A device, part bazooka subwoofer speaker, part drum, and part bellowing feedback loop. Supplier of urban noise this wooden sub-woofer will be the splintered connection to indigenous past. A exploration in movement called Corporeal Reformation will occupy the rest of this space. Inner woven reaction to time, space voice and body, will be aided by the pulse of the sub, riding on witnesses inside a WhiteBox as landscape with their collective voices to activate our collective memory. Trying to reclaim some sort of indigenous or forgotten belief or behavior is close to impossible when these things have been destroyed or co-opted. Where does one turn if their past does not exist to borrow from? Sometimes the things that the colonizer has stereotyped as “indigenous” become the only symbols on which to connect to, either in act of dissent or in hopes of connection. This will further convoluted this already broken system. This semiotics is also the way the colonizers themselves find ways of connecting to more holistic ways of existing. Unearthing resources and the destruction of land not only uproots the indigenous people but also further removes the colonizer from forgotten memories of coexisting, not occupation of this land and its inhabitants (this includes plants and animals). Corporeal Reformation is a union of this attempt to find some contradicting truth To add a bit more texture and dimensional to this night I welcome Mike Meanstreetz (drums) and Z.
