Butó Flutó

Release Party (La Cita)/ Toad Removed (Audio Track) by DBL

La Cita DTLA Tape Release Event

February 2, Tuesday I will be performing along other artist at La Cita's Experimental Night.  8pm no cover.

In collaboration with Brennan Lowe part of my set will have video accompaniment.

Part of the continuing Island of Misfit Toys night at La Cita, this event is also the Parallax Beach/ DivineBrick Tingo Tongo Tapes split tape release.  The tape contains recordings of sounds connected to movements of body once witnessed.  The audio can rightfully stand alone but without the movements that once occurred in tandem, the full concept and experience is lost.  In method of Corporeal Reformation each visceral performance can only have that one outcome.  Context and setting influences the movement.  Truth be told there is video of these particular performances, at a particular place, with movement repeated but not rehearsed, on my site.  Feel free to inquire.

Parallax Beach is a collaboration with Brennan Lowe (movement), josie j (movement), Mike Meanstreetz (sound), Zach Vidal (sound), and Wes Johansan (video).  The tape contains audio from Parallax Scroll a work that explores concepts of primordial beginnings.

The audio from my solo project DivineBrick is the audio from the winter west coast tour I went on in 2014.  Each track is an individual work with form and mood. Tracks also contain sound from the Butó Flutó a wooden/ electronic headware.

Here is a sample track from the set.

Unfolding reforming a motion toward expansion. Meeting points in which this toad will be left for fine.  What will out last the green growth , the crawling friends, the moisture alive? A new form of exploration, fast, but rolling as a troll.  Finding shelter in destruction. Full round we have something oozing out the other end.  Still pulsing still growing.

Accompaniment by the Butó Flutó.

The Búto Flúto: Reflections on Self Derived Relics by DBL

I am Media.

I am the Media.

We are the brick wall woven into a circle.  A flat sphere with no borders.

El centro es el ojo.  Aqui los encontramos.

El Central, donde se cerra el ojo.

Si se manifica se repete.

The Búto Flúto

A Self Derived Ceremonial headpiece.

Made of mahogany reclaimed from an old Baptist church/ Pentecostal Church in South LA.  The Búto Flúto also consists of poplar wood, steam bent ash from the city of Long Beach, purple heart wood, a hacked Gakken Anolog Synth (SX-150), a custom pre-amp with circuit bending copper contact points, wires, a mic and speaker which is the wooden conical shape.

It has been with me since 2008.  It has broken many times and can be fussy.

The sound... it does some interesting things that I am still figuring.  Do to the mic and speaker in close proximity it does a feed back loop similar to most of my wooden speaker box art sculptures.  Because it is a noisy circuit (not very well insulated) It is sensitive to magnetic fields and radio waves, which add interesting behaviors coupled with its SX-150 sound. The circuit bended pre-amp has a flutey sound to it and can rise and lower in pitch when finger are slid along the copper.

There is a track playing in the back ground but most of the sound is the Búto Flúto (on a loop pedal) since it was recorded through its built in mic and speaker. The recorder was held to the speakers funnel.

It has developed it own meaning which I am still understanding.  Steeming from punk anarcho angst, indigenous stirrings, reflecting respect for the ancestral trees, experiments with electricity, now turning into a critique of transhumanistic ironical twist which requires me to add metal hardware (on a piece once only made of wood joinery) for speedy assembly and transportation, but mostly do to damage from performances or general use. A work in flux.

I hope you get to hear it sometime.  I will be with me on tour.

::LA CITA/ Los Angeles :: DOMELAND/ Joshua Tree SHOWS NOV-14-18 by DBL

What does science and religion have in common? They are both trying to figure out the growth, the mechanisms.

What do these two shows have in common?  Potential for Corporeal Reformations,  the Sound is the Symbol.

Winter West Coast Tour 2014: Into the Forest of the NorthWest by DBL

DivineBrick @ WHEREAS Warehouse photo by Amy Darling

Excited to share the Corporeal Reformation this winter.  I will be traveling the west coast with a sonic wave bending into light:

XOVER

(Danilo Casti) : Electro-power-noise audiovisual performance

The project Xover is an electronic sound and visual performance that

runs around glitches, drone noises, field recordings played by digital and analogue

electronics instruments, a mixture between digital and analogue sounds, programming and

circuit bending, idiomatic shapes, abstract sound objects and absurd musical architecture.

PRESENT

is a Los Angeles based quartet performing femininly heavy-experimental music since 2012.Their compositional process is shared between members with most passages crediting all four. As PRESENT is the seminal group for half of its members, their writing and style is idiosyncratically colored as outsider. The tone of their music invokes influences of 20th Century Classical, Black Metal, Japanese underground, Anarcho Punk, art and free jazz. Live shows have been regularly accompanied by performance art, live video, and improvised noise artists also performed with in non-PRESENT iterations.

Saxophonist Erin Worra is trained in classical brass, and singer Angela Gleich has studied and performed flamenco singing. Since 1997 drummer/sequencer Mike Meanstreetz has performed/shown/installed on both coasts of the US (including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles) and extensively recorded and worked in such varied forms as musical free improvisation, experimental music, installation, video, painting, costume, performance art, noise, dance, punk and metal.

PRESENT's recordings have been released on a split LP and various compilations by meta and

micro labels based in France, the Czech Republic, Oakland and Los Angeles.

Their atonal compositions abandon guitars and lyrical form in favor the angular dissonances of female saxophone, synthesizer, and vocals seated atop a hectic percussive intensity. Non-traditional linear song gives way to free form passages, often in collaboration with other artists. On this tour, Mike Glover supports performing noise.

Research Projects traces the steps that connect all practices.  The goal is to manifest a practice that informs and awakes performer and witness.  An exploration in sound and movement this project continues the exploration of Corporeal Reformation.  Self accompanied (drum machine, the Buto' Fluto' {a wooden head piece decked out out with circuit bends and an analog synth}, and loop pedal)  josie j structures a landscape to present "Tail of a Toad" a non-linear long lost story of transformation and corruption. The product is not a performance but a ritual cleansing.  An intense exchange in which something is always gained as some thing is burned.

WHEREAS- HOWEVER- a Bonanza 2 by DBL

Lighting by josie j and Brenn Lowe

heavy improvisation, desert dirging, angular arabesques & fleeting spectrums

WHEREAS HOWEVER summons the shamanistic landscape of a sonic arc lit by video projection and traversed by a troupe of performers whose movement tells the tale.

Constituted of the seamless procession several groups, each piece gathers momentu

m overlapping into the next in moments of collaboration between like and un-like.

Happenstance erodes whilst invigorating contrasts galvanize.

The night also heralds release of CT ASSAULTS' and PRESENT's cassette split on Sanity Muffin Records!

Tuesday Night Post #3.2 by DBL

Lovers,

Its tuesday

-DBL

At this moment I am frustrated.   Dealing with caves of pastured  hills I resist but I enter, knowing what will occur will be a sense of being outside in the darkness.   Just as the walls are moist, so are the chilled blue blades of grass.  This is where I end up tired and achy.  On trips to wild reactions and decisions I take my naps in institutions.  Naturally the seeds that germinate from this conclusion share the same commitment as my execution.  Dialing the proper number to call the doctor, to fill the prescription that murders the patient, in this proof your fail is the solution.  Redialing context of dissolution I stand proud on broken and swollen legs.  Tree trucks left to spoil, finding necks long and hard, wheels in mud stuck, the child cherishes his freedom.

With growth and pain rounded fingers feel around as wealth regains.

With repetition I find nostalgia when nothing changes assuring I remember the following.

With repetition I lay my head at the feet I adore without no standards.

With repetition I assure the memory deforms in dome or shelter bending as needed for the assault.

Gems, found in beds left for dead.

Michael Nannery :: DBRP :: Intimatchine @ AHC by DBL

Lovers,

The Show at Almost Holden Collective was intimate, tasty, and seductive.

Intimatchine was a lovely hypnotic landscape of dreams.  Michael Nannery was a memory trip of textures and primal awakenings.  AHC thank you for your hospitality.

Everyone was open to the freakers we are.  Thanks for your support.

It was a treat to further explore this experiment of self deconstruction which is "Research in Religious Self-Cybernetics: Pruning the Rose, Eating the Thorn".  The ritual object which you see was finally named that night.  Pronounce in Spanish, Butó Flutó.  Thanks Wes.  My need for smirks and giggles in my work is much needed.

Enjoy this peek behind the veil... If you were not present.

Tarfest Recap- "Research in Performance, Sound, and Dissent" by DBL

Cohabitants,

With hopes of transforming each molecule and atom of the Tarfest audience with waves of undulating, random and beaten sounds, this invocation delivered.

To tilt the unbalanced unconscious was the goal. Success measured in unveiling of error for tomorrow to be recalculated.

Thanks to ones that transformed into characters of weight, appreciation for the passive willing to absorb, acknowledgment for those active but not brought to light and special thanks to two extraordinary ladies (and one life stream in utero), willing testifiers, active and transformed.

One peculiar thing. Just before the performance music was turn on in the gallery, played through the p.a. system. By the end it fused with the noise of the performance and gave a nice texture.

This video and sound objects were presented the remaining days of the show.

-DBL

Wooden form functions as a resonator feedbacking onto itself to produce a wave of undulating texture. Headpiece has a pitch bended analog synth. Piece was and exploration in control symbolism and recontextualization them.

Old Guy Running Exhibit by DBL

The show consisted of 2 wooden pieces one a table the other a headpiece and two performers.

The table was not a table in traditional sense but more of an organ or instrument of sorts.  It worked as a resonator.  The top barrel shaped form was made of ceramic.  Inside it was a speaker and a microphone.  The microphone ran through an electronic effects device, to an alpine car amp then to the sub-woofer speaker in the form.  The actual table was made of lumber from the urban forest of long beach.  This piece was controlled by one performer through nobs on the top of the table.

The head piece was made of reclaimed lumber from an old Baptist church/ Pentecostal church.  The headpiece also had a microphone located in the conal shaped form and a analog synth embedded in the body which also had nobs and circuit bending switches.  This piece was worn and controlled by the second performer.

Here are some shots from the show:
